Leading Horses by Our Very Own Derek Evry

I hope you all had a lovely Pride Month! Let’s keep the celebration going beyond June with Leading Horses by our very own Derek Evry. While living in a seemingly more loving and accepting world than before, looking at your authentic self in the mirror at any stage of life can feel intimidating and even impossible at times. This song beautifully encapsulates the feeling of late self-discovery, specifically in discovering your queerness later in life using metaphors and idioms. Discovering an important part of your identity at any age can be daunting, but later in life discoveries can make someone feel like they are not enough, it is too late for them, or a fraud.

“I’ve been drinking poison
To escape the noise and
I've been leading horses”

To me, these lyrics mean pretending to be someone you are not for the sake of others and ignoring yourself by distracting yourself with the lives of other people. While I cannot relate in discovering queerness, other late in life discoveries have left me feeling like this.

As we face challenges, remember that you are valid, it is not too late, being yourself is enough, and it is okay to be selfish sometimes and choose the horse instead of the carriage!

Fans of Coldplay and Kings of Leon are sure to enjoy Derek’s warm voice. Listen here:
