Los Angeles-Based, New Jersey/Philadelphia-Raised Funky Soul Pop Star Wowashwow Wow’s Us With Her New Single “Heat Wave,” Dripping With Attitude, Charisma, and Swag

By Linc Bradham

Dripping with attitude, charisma, and swag, South Jersey/Philadelphia raised, Los Angeles based artist Wowashwow (pronounced “wow-USH-wow”) is a colorful, vibrant, and attitude-driven tour de force with influences as varied as Lizzo, Nina Simone, and even Morcheeba. But her vocal inflection and style are something she makes all her own, divesting her from these exciting influences and turning her personal brand into something that is completely new. She has been immersed in music for most of her life. At age six, she wrote her first song and actually initially embarked on a music career as the lead guitarist of a punk band. By age 18, she had already opened for Marky Ramone, of The Ramones fame. These days, however, Wowashwow has all but shed her punk roots, creating music that has a different attitude and flair, with soul vibes, R & B, and hip hop cadences.

For her latest single, “Heat Wave,” Wowashwow is calling for her listeners to “groove and vibe,” to the backdrop of wonderfully complex bars and rhythmic sense. All of this is set to a trip-hop style beat, with expertly played and sampled horns, percussion, and synth pads. It’s a fun, anthemic jam, that sounds every bit as hot as the “heat wave” that Wowashwow proclaims to be in the song’s lyrics. The music video is quite the visual feast as well, with wonderfully skilled graphic creator Voodoo Visuals providing the cinematography and production. You can truly feel the heat Wowashwow is bringing in the video, and it’s hard to not feel at least a little hot yourself after witnessing the splendor that is Wowashwow. No need to take our word for it, however, check out the music video for Wowashwow’s “Heat Wave” here, and prepare to be wowed yourself.

Foghat Sonic Mojo 2024 Tour. Fillmore Silver Spring, MD March 9
DMV

Foghat’s Roger Earl Refuses to Slow His Ride

By this point in his life, Foghat founding drummer Roger Earl has visited quite a few doctors. But what may be surprising is that the percussionist, 77, is quick to point out that many of the medical professionals who have worked on him also enjoy rocking out.

“Nearly all the doctors and surgeons I know, they all play something: trumpet, sax, violin, guitar,” Earl said recently. “There’s not too many drummers that are surgeons, there’s probably a good reason for that!”

Earl half-jokingly invites his surgeon-rockers to join him and the other members of Foghat onstage at the Fillmore in Silver Spring March 9, where they will be headlining the Rock and Roll for Children Foundation benefit for the Children’s Inn at NIH. Earl, the only original member of Foghat still in the band, will be banging the skins behind guitarist Bryan Bassett and other members Scott Holt and Rodney O’Quinn. “Slow Ride,” the band’s 1975 megahit, is all but assured to be on the setlist, along with tunes from Foghat’s most recent record, “Sonic Mojo.”
