What’s ‘Next’ For M4TR?

By Jaci Jedrych

Music can be a powerful tool for activism, something that inspired the genesis of M4TR (Music 4 The Revolution). Evolving from their origins as a live band in the DMV, their latest album, “Next,” was home-produced during quarantine.

M4TR began as a live band in 2017, releasing a number of singles and an album, but the group separated during the coronavirus pandemic quarantine. Davin “AJ” Hutchins kept the music alive with a second album and will continue to release music under M4TR. His goal is to perform live again as an art-rock, retro wave band.

AJ’s latest project focuses on the time of permanent uncertainty that the pandemic has caused, as well as accepting that some dreams are not meant to be. Lyrically he says it addresses, “technology addiction, cancel culture, colorblindness, mass shootings, soccer as philosophy, First Nations wisdom, vengeful ghosts, nature after man, empty stages and life-long love.” Sonically, this album features the indie pop-rock sound, but with more danceable beats and lots of electronic elements.

Fans of bands like Phil Collins or alt-J would enjoy the music of M4TR. The message is as important as the melody for M4TR, so activists for social change should also check out M4TR.
