The Alchemist
Inspired by the subversive surrealism of Spanish filmmaker Luis Bunuel, and the electronic sounds of synthwave, Well, Bunuel. is the culmination of a lot of different factors for its creator, native South East Michigan resident, Steve Barker.
After writing, recording, and touring with various bands over the last 20 years, Barker started this solo recording project with a laptop, a bass and a few keyboards and plugins after the global pandemic of 2020 put a forcible hold on every group of musicians around the world. His debut EP, “Future Resolution” is available everywhere now!
‘Safe For Now’ opens “Future Resolution” and is the perfect introduction to the Well, Bunuel. sound. A solid beat keeps the track moving as different sounds, textures and melodies dip in and out with heady precision. This track has some elements that remind you of “Once in a Lifetime” by Talking Heads. “Save It” is another groove oriented track with a hot bassline and a synthesized melody that you may hear in a movie set in 1980’s California mall along with any other songs off of the EP. “Name Your Heart” slows things down slightly but doesn’t lose the feel of the previous two tracks with its fat bassline and sinewy lead line. “My House Or Yours?” is a collaboration between Well, Bunuel. and Growroom Productions’ main man, Lee Durham. Durham provided the drum track and Well, Bunuel. took care of the rest. Once again, melody and rhythm are taken on a surreal trip and the result is both danceable and captivating at the same time. As the first offering from Well, Bunuel., “Future Resolution” is the musical equivalent of a dream and a groove mashed together to help the body move and the head to float simultaneously. By this point in his life, Foghat founding drummer Roger Earl has visited quite a few doctors. But what may be surprising is that the percussionist, 77, is quick to point out that many of the medical professionals who have worked on him also enjoy rocking out.
“Nearly all the doctors and surgeons I know, they all play something: trumpet, sax, violin, guitar,” Earl said recently. “There’s not too many drummers that are surgeons, there’s probably a good reason for that!”
Earl half-jokingly invites his surgeon-rockers to join him and the other members of Foghat onstage at the Fillmore in Silver Spring March 9, where they will be headlining the Rock and Roll for Children Foundation benefit for the Children’s Inn at NIH. Earl, the only original member of Foghat still in the band, will be banging the skins behind guitarist Bryan Bassett and other members Scott Holt and Rodney O’Quinn. “Slow Ride,” the band’s 1975 megahit, is all but assured to be on the setlist, along with tunes from Foghat’s most recent record, “Sonic Mojo.”
