Watersdeep Tackles Depression with “The Sadness In Her Eyes”

By Charlie Maybee

DC based post hardcore band, Watersdeep, are bringing back early 2000’s emo punk vibes with their new single “The Sadness In Her Eyes”.

With guitars that modulate between chugging palm mutes and more melodic ambience, this is a song that straddles the line between metal and punk in the same way that bands like AFI, Jimmy Eat World, and Yellowcard tended towards. The tenor vocals of lead singer, Gabe Jaar, wail and cut through the dense mix with ease with a sense of wallowing, or yearning.

Lyrically, the song addresses notions of depression and possible suicidal tendencies head on. “And I don’t wanna say goodbye tonight / I just wanna know what I can do / I can’t repair the sadness in her eyes”. Whether it’s a significant other or friend, there is a loved one in trouble and Watersdeep refuses to let her suffer through it on her own. “We’ll find a way”, Jaar sings in the outro, “We’ll make it out alive”.

As the latest in a string of successful singles releases in the pandemic era, Watersdeep is a band that is unafraid to tackle dark and difficult subject matter. And while that may make for a morose listening experience, there is something cathartic to the emotional release. There is no doubt that this energy translates with even more potency in a live setting, so if you missed their latest performance at Songbyrd in Washington D.C. on July 7, 2022, keep an eye on the Alchemical Records Go section for events like this happening around the region.
