Vinscat Blurs Genre Lines with Jazz Inspired Hip-Hop Single, “Black Box Freestyle”

By Daniel Warren Hill

The latest single by Hip-Hop recording artist Vinscat, “Black Box Freestyle” may be one of the most well-traveled singles we’ve received. Originally from the Marseille, France, VInscat was inspired by London’s rich music scene and began developing her project there, where she currently resides, performing her first shows in the UK and in Sweden. The music of “Black Box Freestyle” was produced in collaboration with Brooklyn, New York, USA-based beatmaker 1080Z, and the music video was filmed inside renowned Malmö, Sweden music venue “Inkonst.” The song’s incredible journey continues, now traveling in the hearts and minds of listeners since its release on May 13.

Written during the lockdown, “Black Box Freestyle” is a song that embodies reflective and personal lyrics exploring Vinscat’s struggle for success through her musical endeavors along with the added weight of the psychological, physical, and socioeconomic circumstances faced during the global COVID-19 pandemic, still affecting artists and fans all over the world. The track is darker in tone than Vinscat’s 2019 single, “Fruit Wish”, and 2021’s “Let me try”, both of which possess an uptempo musical feel and generally more optimistic lyrics. All of Vinscat’s releases to date are heavily Jazz-influenced with varying degrees of traditional instrumentation combined with modern production techniques resulting in a truly unique sonic contribution to the world of Conscious Hip-Hop.

Vinscat intends on releasing future freestyle tracks in collaboration with other beatmakers over the next few months, exploring various lyrical concepts both in French and English and continuing to push the boundaries between genres. Though not quite ready to tell all yet, Vinscat did share that a forthcoming freestyle track is already in development with a producer from her hometown in Marseille. Hopefully, these well-traveled tracks will find their way into regular rotation on your favorite music streaming platform.
