The Sweet and the Strange in Modern Moxie’s ‘Gutter Honey’

By Charlie Maybee

North Carolina based multi-instrumentalist Madison Lucas (aka Modern Moxie) returns with a new single, “Gutter Honey,” which teases the release of a new EP of the same name coming out March 11.

Sporting a larger-than-life sound that chimes through with echoing guitars and choir-like backing vocals, Modern Moxie describes it as “a song about filtering through life’s sludge and finding beautiful things. Written in lockdown while watching too many episodes of Twin Peaks.” A solid citation for a song that feels simultaneously straightforward, yet formless like a rushing waterfall caught in slow motion.

Somewhere between Alabama Shakes, Big Thief, Karen O, and The Cranberries is where Lucas nestles her sound. Naturally warm in nature, it’s a song that feels good and washes over you without bowling you over. The same way that saltwater pools naturally allow bodies to float without any effort, Modern Moxie captures an ethereal tone that has enough substance to carry you off into the horizon, if you let it.

As the final single before the official release of the 5-track EP, “Gutter Honey” gushes with fantastic vibes and potential. Something sweet for those who need some sort of escape mixed with the “gutter” bitterness of thoughtful lyrics and provoking melodies will leave you with a niche aesthetic experience that is both thrilling, and a little weird (in the best way possible).

“Gutter Honey” is available on major streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and SoundCloud. Follow our Alchemical Multigenre Mixdown playlist for more great music featured on the site.
