The Firnats Walk ‘Toward a Beacon’

By Jaci Jedrych

Featuring funky vocals and grunge guitar, The Firnats’ latest EP “Toward a Beacon” is a unique, intriguing sonic collection.

Formed in 2015, the Northern Virginia-based band has found their niche in the Richmond music scene. When lead singer Sean Flanagan moved south to attend Virginia Commonwealth University, he found the Richmond scene opened a lot of doors for him. Since their inception, The Firnats have released two albums and four singles. “Towards a Beacon” is their only EP.

“Toward a Beacon” brings listeners on a journey with the band. It offers a unique blend of 90s grunge with 50s doo-wop sounds, surprising its captive audience with each note. One standout song is “Wake Up in the Evening,” a twist on classic alternative rock.

Fans of alternative rock like The Strokes or Franz Ferdinand looking to expand their palette should check out The Firnats. Their music is unique yet nostalgic, and sure to charm any listener.
