Ten Minute Detour Trades Materialism for Good Vibes in “On We Go”

By Charlie Maybee

Calgary based alternative rock band, Ten Minute Detour, is back with chill indie vibes in their new single “On We Go”. If you took the more recent Cage the Elephant albums and combined it with the stacked harmonies of The Eagles, you would probably concoct something akin to what this song offers.

The band sports a carefree attitude here as they let the musical current pull them where it may, but always with a big swelling energy of crashing waves. The vibes are plenty positive as they skirt any sense of responsibility that has burdened them in the past. “On we go / Laying low” they sing gently through the chorus, “Getting off on what we owe”. As the vocals get more ambient, there are moments that feel floaty while others move full steam ahead. All the while, there is a feeling of peace like you could just fade into the sound and lose yourself.

“Returning home from tour broke with the realization that we really don’t need much to be happy, eating canned chickpeas for months” the band reflects, “We wrote “On We Go” as a critique of materialistic culture. It’s easy to want to spend money on things that make life easy, or more comfortable. But sometimes it can feel like those material goods are more of a burden than a comfort, confining you and keeping you from maybe stepping out of your comfort and experiencing and learning new things.”

“On We Go” and the B-side single, “Morning Bird” are available on major streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, and BandCamp. Find more great music on the Alchemical Records Multigenre Mixture playlist on Spotify.
