The COVID-19 pandemic has ushered in cabin fever and feelings of wanderlust worldwide. Following his acclaimed self-titled debut solo EP, Sydney-based psychedelic pop artist Tim Ayre offers a three-minute escape via his dreamy new single “Miami Drive.”
The road-trip ready release, full of fizzy guitar riffs and tasteful Beatle-esque flair, reminds listeners freedom is often found in the journey, not the destination. Tim explains, “With the lack of travel recently, I was writing songs that made me think of being away somewhere. Things took a funny turn when Ollie, the music video director, and I got together to work out how we could shoot a clip about Miami while being stuck in Australia.”
Eventually, Tim discovered a street in regional Victoria called Miami Drive that became the preferred setting for the music video. In the absence of Florida palm trees and scenic sun-drenched beaches, audiences get a taste of Australian holiday culture, which is arguably equally as delightful. Tim’s colorful, wistful style transports listeners to the 70s – VHS tapes, oversized sunglasses, shoulder pads, shag haircuts, and all.
“Miami Drive” explores themes of lost and found. Lyrics such as “took a walk into the great unknown” and “can’t you help me ’cause I’ve lost my way?” suggest Miami Drive represents a symbolic compass, guiding each listener toward their true north, which is seldom a direct route.
Tim Ayre’s fresh retro sound and distinct artistry continue to expand his reach, including recent media spots in Triple J, KCRW, BBC1extra, Surviving The Golden Age, and Variance Magazine. His solo EP, released in 2019, has since received over 1.24 million streams.
Perhaps most importantly, Tim’s latest single reminds listeners to seek out adventure in their own backyard and find the silver lining in the unexpected places. “Miami Drive” is filled with wonder, nostalgia, and jolly – a timely, must-have addition to your summer playlist, especially for when you’re able to finally take that road trip.
