Sophia DeLeo Channels “Maggie Rogers” in New Music Video

By Charlie Maybee

New York City based singer-songwriter, Sophia DeLeo, is back with a brand-new music video for her single “Maggie Rogers”, the first leading single off her upcoming sophomore EP which is scheduled to be released in 2023.

Against a collage of backdrops like fields, bleachers, and bedrooms, many of which prominently feature water (ponds, lakes, beaches, and even fish tanks), DeLeo strums her banjo with a giant smile on her face. There’s plenty of reflection and nostalgia that comes through each note as we see her flip through old year books and notes how people have told her that her singing is reminiscent of famous American folk pop musician Maggie Rogers

“You can’t really hear, but if you listen closely under the bridge, we purposely added some very ‘Alaska’-esque ‘ooohs’ when recording the song, just so there would be a little bit of Maggie in the song itself” DeLeo notes, “Before even shooting the video, I knew I wanted to recreate her iconic look from her ‘Heard It In a Past Life’ album cover. After I sent over a few Maggie videos as inspiration, Matt went location scouting, and the beach we shot some of the video was so perfect…it was mid-March when we were shooting so it was freezing, but it was exactly the vision I had in my head for what this song should look like.”

And the inspiration comes through quite clearly with a lot of outdoor locations and golden hour lighting that soaks the footage with a warm glow. As the lead into her next big release, it is a lovely introduction that flows with positivity and introspection, despite some inspiration that stems from darker moments in DeLeo’s past.

“I did a lot of soul searching the past two years, a lot of work in therapy on some trauma from my teenage years that I didn’t even know existed,” DeLeo shares. “This is some of the most important music I feel I’ve ever written, so I really want to take my time during the recording process. But the next track is being mixed and mastered as we speak, and I can already tell it’s going to be so good. This is a big project, and I’m super excited to share more from it.”

“Maggie Rogers” is available on major streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music. The accompanying music video is also available on YouTube. You can read Alchemical Records’ coverage of one of her previous singles, “Trouble,” and  find this and more great music on the Alchemical Records Multigenre Mixture playlist on Spotify or YouTube.
