Shane Rennison Warns of Giving Too Much with “You Don’t Wanna Hear It”

By Charlie Maybee

New York based indie pop musician, Shane Rennison, is taking his next swing with the new single “You Don’t Wanna Hear It”. As his first official release under his official name (he recently dropped the stage name Rennii), he is making waves with this cosmic approach to pop music.

Modulating between the sprawling synthesizers of the chorus and the playful, percussive verses, this is a song that feels larger than life despite a more laid-back vibe. Lyrically, he tells a story of a woman who struggles to define herself as she pursues a career as a musician. “She plays a love song / Thinks about her loved ones / Singing, but there’s no one there” he sings as he builds into the first chorus.

There’s a level of disconnection that you can sense from the story that comes across from the nonchalance of Rennison’s vocals. They’re breathy and soft which stands in contrast to the electricity of the musical composition. “Curtain call and it’s time to take flight / With her feet off the ground she can go all night / What’s another one?” he asks sarcastically before lamenting about how he “tried to tell her, but she don’t want to hear it, no”

This is a solid song that fuses contemporary adult pop music with classic storytelling that tackles the age-old consequences of pursuing fame. As a musician himself, the lyrics almost act like a warning  – “Are you happy there / Now that you don’t have a care in the world?”
