Seven Layer Piano Cakes and VRL Explore the “Endgame”

By Margaret Adams

Los Angeles-based artist Justin Hoyt, otherwise known as Seven Layer Piano Cakes, has released his collaborative single with VRL called “Endgame.” Following the releases of Hoyt’s second EP “The Patriarch” and singles “Middlegame” and “Remy”, this single is the first collaboration between the two artists.

Hoyt, a classically trained pianist and vocalist, was inspired to write and produce music that is a throwback to the complexities and sounds of different eras, specifically early 2000s alternative and 80’s New Wave. He is inspired by artists such as Elliot Smith, Depeche Mode, and Sufjan Stevens. While his inspirations come from many different places and people, the things that are always consistent with Seven Layer Piano Cakes are some seventh chords, myriad musical layers, and intricate vocal harmonies (the “cakes”). On top of his career as a musician, Hoyt also works as an attorney and law professor.

“Endgame” is the third single in the Seven Layer Piano Cakes “Chess Trilogy” of songs (the last two being “Novel Opening” and “Middlegame”). With an edgy dream pop feel, the single incorporates layers in its production and vocals, exploring the complexities of the ends and aftermaths of long-term relationships.

Fans of Beach House, Muse, M83, and The Weeknd should check out Seven Layer Piano Cakes and VRL’s new single, “Endgame” on Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp, Youtube, and Soundcloud. Find this track and other great music on the Alchemical Records Multigenre Mixture on Spotify.
