Secret Beach Takes Us to the November Sky

by Kimberly Shires

Secret Beach will have released their new single “November Sky” on November 15. Click here to listen on Spotify. “November Sky” is meant to evoke the feeling of sitting on a beach under the stars with friends as a campfire slowly dies out while the music still plays until everyone falls asleep under the November Sky. Secret Beach achieves this mood with soaring strings, a steady primal drumbeat, delicate piano riffs, intimate vocals, and vivid imagery in the lyrics. Ben (pianist) and Sarah (singer/guitarist) finished writing this song at 11:58pm on November 30th 2018, barely making it “November Sky”.

Recording “November Sky” was also an adventure. The band’s recording studio suddenly became unavailable so the band rigged a full studio in Ben’s bedroom. The weather that day was a scorcher and each band member took turns sweating through their shirts in the dark insulated room playing along to a click track. The band told us, “It was actually an incredibly fun bonding experience and made the recording turn out more soulful and powerful. The combination of heat and darkness helped transport us to the imagined setting of the song, and we felt every rhythm and word. We literally put sweat (no tears yet) into this song and the result is worth it!”

Secret beach is looking to record two new songs soon. The first is a powerful song about loss and perseverance called “Azul Y Tu”. This dual lingual song in Spanish and English was co-written with Stephanie Hernandez. The second song is called “Breathe in Green”. This song is serene but has a solid energy about living in the hustle of the city, yet having a peaceful place to go in your mind when the city gets overwhelming. The band is currently searching for a good local studio to partner with to record this track. Hint hint.

Foghat’s Roger Earl Refuses to Slow His Ride

By this point in his life, Foghat founding drummer Roger Earl has visited quite a few doctors. But what may be surprising is that the percussionist, 77, is quick to point out that many of the medical professionals who have worked on him also enjoy rocking out.

“Nearly all the doctors and surgeons I know, they all play something: trumpet, sax, violin, guitar,” Earl said recently. “There’s not too many drummers that are surgeons, there’s probably a good reason for that!”

Earl half-jokingly invites his surgeon-rockers to join him and the other members of Foghat onstage at the Fillmore in Silver Spring March 9, where they will be headlining the Rock and Roll for Children Foundation benefit for the Children’s Inn at NIH. Earl, the only original member of Foghat still in the band, will be banging the skins behind guitarist Bryan Bassett and other members Scott Holt and Rodney O’Quinn. “Slow Ride,” the band’s 1975 megahit, is all but assured to be on the setlist, along with tunes from Foghat’s most recent record, “Sonic Mojo.”
