Running Away From it All With Gold Spectacles in New Single, “Anywhere Else”

Ever feel like skipping town for an adventure? While it’s not always possible to get away from it all, Gold Spectacles’ new single, “Anywhere Else —” released Thursday, February 23rd — gives listeners a welcome escape.

The single is the latest to arrive from this London-based feel-good indie pop duo’s upcoming EP, “More Heart than Sense.” With subtle nods to Bombay Bicycle Club and Phoenix, the song is dynamic and evolving, maintaining consistently mellow vibes throughout while somehow still being, not only playful, but downright danceable.

“We wrote ‘Anywhere Else’ on a trip to Barcelona, our first time abroad since the pandemic, because we didn’t want to go home,” says the duo. “We borrowed a guitar and recorded all the parts on our phones with a rough sketch of the vocal line. Over the following days, we pieced together the lyrics in tapas bars and on the metro. The desire to leave everything mundane behind was overwhelming and the thought of running away never looked so good. As soon as we got back to London, we went straight to the studio to finish it. We ended up keeping some of the Spanish guitar we recorded on the voice memos so we don’t forget the tapas and Cava anytime soon.”

Lay back and relax where you are and dream of where you might head in the future with Gold Spectacles. You can find “Anywhere Else” on Spotify, Apple Music, and… anywhere else! Expect the band’s new EP May 2023. Find this and more on the Alchemical Records Multigenre Mixture playlist on Spotify.

Foghat Sonic Mojo 2024 Tour. Fillmore Silver Spring, MD March 9

Foghat’s Roger Earl Refuses to Slow His Ride

By this point in his life, Foghat founding drummer Roger Earl has visited quite a few doctors. But what may be surprising is that the percussionist, 77, is quick to point out that many of the medical professionals who have worked on him also enjoy rocking out.

“Nearly all the doctors and surgeons I know, they all play something: trumpet, sax, violin, guitar,” Earl said recently. “There’s not too many drummers that are surgeons, there’s probably a good reason for that!”

Earl half-jokingly invites his surgeon-rockers to join him and the other members of Foghat onstage at the Fillmore in Silver Spring March 9, where they will be headlining the Rock and Roll for Children Foundation benefit for the Children’s Inn at NIH. Earl, the only original member of Foghat still in the band, will be banging the skins behind guitarist Bryan Bassett and other members Scott Holt and Rodney O’Quinn. “Slow Ride,” the band’s 1975 megahit, is all but assured to be on the setlist, along with tunes from Foghat’s most recent record, “Sonic Mojo.”
