Restless Modern Lives Up To Its Name with ‘on and on’

By Daniel Warren Hill

This reading of Alchemical Records content provides a multimedia experience for our audience while increasing the accessibility of our content to persons with hearing loss, low vision, dyslexia, physical or motor disabilities, or are on the autism spectrum.

There isn’t anything wrong with modern aesthetics. Every generation has a sound that partly defines the times in which that music is created, whether because of its lyrical content, instrumentation, or the changes in technology and how we experience music. Restless Modern lives up to its name with their latest single “on and on,” which has both a modern sound and a timeless appeal through its careful composition and arrangement.

Appealing to a listener’s pop sensibilities, the track’s dynamic textures are at once uplifting and haunting, perhaps made even more so by the conflict illustrated by phrases like, “I know it’s wrong to get so mad / But I can’t shake it / And I could blame a lack of patience / On my trauma or these maladies / But you deserve some affirmation from a person who is less fucked up than me.” It’s easy to appreciate how this 25-year-old artist has attracted nearly that many million Spotify streams, as well as the attention of outlets like Billboard, Lyrical Lemonade, MTV, and Atwood.

A frustratingly short single (thank you repeat), “on and on” was produced by Restless Modern and Peter Thomas (P!nk, Betty Who, Allie X), mixed by Zach Pennington (salem ilese, Tommy Lefroy) and mastered by John and Tess Greenham (Billie Eilish, FINNEAS, Cautious Clay).

The combined experiences from these contributors all come together to form a beautifully crafted musical and lyrical narrative whose juxtapositions cunningly delve into the concepts of human nature; whether or not we are aware of our flaws and whether or not awareness alone is enough for us to break the negative cycles we find ourselves in, as either a victim or villain.

“On and on” (available now on all major platforms) is the leading single from Modern Restless’ forthcoming EP, “a likeness complicit,” which will be available later this year. Listen below, and find more great music on the Alchemical Multi-Genre Mixture Spotify playlist.

Foghat’s Roger Earl Refuses to Slow His Ride

By this point in his life, Foghat founding drummer Roger Earl has visited quite a few doctors. But what may be surprising is that the percussionist, 77, is quick to point out that many of the medical professionals who have worked on him also enjoy rocking out.

“Nearly all the doctors and surgeons I know, they all play something: trumpet, sax, violin, guitar,” Earl said recently. “There’s not too many drummers that are surgeons, there’s probably a good reason for that!”

Earl half-jokingly invites his surgeon-rockers to join him and the other members of Foghat onstage at the Fillmore in Silver Spring March 9, where they will be headlining the Rock and Roll for Children Foundation benefit for the Children’s Inn at NIH. Earl, the only original member of Foghat still in the band, will be banging the skins behind guitarist Bryan Bassett and other members Scott Holt and Rodney O’Quinn. “Slow Ride,” the band’s 1975 megahit, is all but assured to be on the setlist, along with tunes from Foghat’s most recent record, “Sonic Mojo.”
