New Single, “The Record” is One of Many Anticipated Gems by Songwriter Daniel Versman

By Daniel Warren Hill

“The Record,” the latest single by Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Daniel Versman brings listeners a warm smile within just a few bars.

Recorded in 2017 in Chicago with producer Brian Deck (Iron and Wine, Fruit Bats), “The Record” is the second single from a forthcoming EP of the same name. Versman is sitting on a veritable gold mine of new music, but wasn’t ready to start releasing under his own name until March of 2022 with his debut single, “Angeles.” On one hand, it is a shame that listeners haven’t had the opportunity to experience these personal and emotive works until now, but on the other hand, the timing is always right for heartfelt lyrics and spiritually reflective truths that Versman sometimes delivers only at a whisper.

The stark contrast between “Angeles” and “The Record” hints at the versatility of influences and how focused Daniel Versman is as a songwriter and composer. If Versman serves future songs from off The Record EP the way he does these two singles, we expect fans will be itching to get their hands on any new piece of media he is ready to share with the world. “The amount of material I have is ridiculous,” says Versman. “I could release a song every month for the next year and a half.” Later mentioning the selection process for working with Deck as a producer, “I just sent Brian, like, 100 demos; I’m not even kidding…of all these songs I had done since I was 13, and I think he picked five of them so we did those five.”

Folk Rock, Chamber Pop, Pop Rock, or however you classify it, “The Record” delivers a feel-good vibe. Originally written as a folk guitar ballad song morphed into an up-tempo rock song. Versman says he and Deck were inspired by the round bass and exciting percussive elements in Paul Simon’s ‘Graceland,’ while the stabbing saxophone notes in the second half of the chorus were inspired by similar horn parts in John Lennon’s “Watching The Wheels”.
