Michy Tree Embraces Halloween with New EP “Purgatory”

England-based singer-songwriter Michy Tree released her brand new six-track EP, Purgatory, on Oct. 28. – three days before Halloween – to play into the spookiness that comes with this time of year. The EP features a range of tracks that Tree has created throughout her years as a musician, and is filled with bass, drums, guitar, synth, and her impressive vocals that add to its alternative rock feel. “Purgatory is a collection of songs to bring out your inner emo and embrace the season of Halloween,” she says.

The EP was mainly recorded from her bedroom and produced by Dan Weller (Enter Shikari). It begins with “VIP”, which has a soft ukulele sound in contrast to its dark lyrics. This song is playful, utilizing creepy sound effects and even Tree’s laughing while delivering a chorus, as it gains momentum and evolves into a more hardcore rock sound. It is an eerie beginning to this Halloween-inspired project.

“Nuclear City” opens with strong guitar that makes you want to get up and rock out. “Fire surrounds every town / The water is turning brown / It’s too late to escape,” Tree sings of this experimental city plagued with dark skies. “Red Crane” sounds different from the two previous songs; it has a slower and more somber start. Speaking to this crane, she asks it to be gentle and hold her tight – “Show me home,” she repeats. This figure acts as something that she wishes to protect her from the strange and scary circumstances she tells us of. It picks up at the end with a strong belt at the end of the chorus and the guitar gets heavier for an epic outro to this otherwise slower song.

“Medusa”, “Bite”, and “Dead to Me” seem to be directed to people who have hurt her in the past. However, Michy Tree shows us how to not let the people who wrong you stand in the way of your success. As we hear in this album, she will not hold back.
