Matt Tarka – Stands Out Of The “Crowds”

by Daniel Warren Hill

A former DMV area musician (back in the day we both frequently haunted IOTA), for the last few years Matt Tarka has been putting down roots and releasing new music from his old stomping grounds in Lancaster, PA. His latest single “Crowds” premiered just a little over a week ago on NYC based music magazine & website The Big Takeover and is the followup single to Tarka’s first release of 2021, “Good Morning Sympathy”. This upbeat rock song with soaring slide guitar sets the stage for the track’s lead character intent on ‘manipulating all the crowds,’ and it makes for great art to have these dark lyrical overtones mingled with such optimistic sounding music.

Like “Good Morning Sympathy” and Tarka’s 2016 & 2017 EPs, Surely Late and Vision Hazy, “Crowds” was recorded with Ted Comerford (Jukebox the Ghost) at Low Watt in Savannah, GA and mixed by Mitch Easter (R.E.M., Pavement) at Fidelitorium Recordings in Kernersville, NC.  For the album artwork for this track, Tarka enlisted the services of Harrisburg artist Kelly McGee Curran.

Tarka’s consistent authenticity and earnestness in songwriting and performance continues to appeal to longtime fans and newer audiences alike. Have a listen to “Crowds” below and hear it for yourself.

Jamie Darken Breathes New Life Into Solo EP, Burial.

When Jamie Darken first began writing the songs that would appear on his debut solo EP, Burial, he imagined he was crafting demos for Cherry Ames, a local Washington DC area indie-rock band that Darken performs as vocalist, guitarist, and bassist. With Cherry Ames on hiatus amidst the global shutdown and performing in venues unavailable as an option, Darken’s drive to make progress with the ideas on his own eventually brought the tracks to the place where it simply felt right to release as his own project. The result is five songs written, produced, and performed by Darken, with the exception of leading single “This Could Be Your Home” co-written with fellow DC area musician Christopher Mathews-Larsen.
