Nine-time Grammy Award-winning global superstar Mary J. Blige released her latest album, GOOD MORNING GORGEOUS, today, February 11. The 13-track collection showcases the R&B legend at her best, reminding listeners of the immense talent behind Blige’s famed “Queen of Hip-Hop Soul” title. Blige’s album is frontrunner to her upcoming historic performance at the Pepsi Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show, where she will perform alongside Dr. Dre, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, and Kendrick Lamar.
“Rent Money,” the most recent single from GOOD MORNING GORGEOUS, features rapper Dave East. The track was produced by D’Mile and mixed by Serban Ghenea at MixStar Studios in Virginia Beach. Minimal and impeccably placed instrumentation create sleek, classy vibes, allowing Blige’s warm, soulful vocals to take centerstage. The laid-back nature of the composition creates a powerful tension with the song’s exploration of the emotional theme of relationship woes. The brass section adds a sensual vibe.
“I spent everything on ya / Spent my energy on ya / Put that loyalty on ya / I ain’t got nothing left,” Blige sings before entering the song’s chorus, “Look now my rent money due / I spent everything fuckin’ with you / They say you win some, you win some you lose/ All I got is rent money due.”
Money symbolism carries throughout the song, suggesting that the no-good lover leaves the story’s heroine depleted, cut short, and in a position of scarcity – just like the missing rent money. “This isn’t love, this is foolish / I just want back what I put into this / And then I’ll keep movin’,” Blige sings. It’s clear the heroine is no novice and has found herself in a similar position before, left to scrape up leftovers in an attempt to pay what’s due in life and love.
GOOD MORNING GORGEOUS also features collaborations with Anderson .Paak, DJ Khaled, Fivio Foreign, and Usher.
