Marilyn Hucek Celebrates Her Squad with Empowerment Anthem, ‘Girls Girl’

By Cynthia Gross

Ladies, listen up. This one is for you. On February 25, Washington, D.C.-born American-Chilean artist Marilyn Hucek released her latest single, “Girls Girl,” just in time to kick off Women’s History Month. The song is 100% written, produced, and performed by women, including supporting creative elements like photography and graphic design. The bold track celebrates the power of being a woman and calls out the patriarchy with equal amounts of class and sass.

Hucek was inspired to write “Girls Girl” after a close friend experienced a break-up. Since Hucek could not physically be there, the song was her way of empowering her friend (and listeners everywhere) with confidence and courage to find a new path forward. “I hope more women realize that we need to support each other instead of bringing each other down,” Hucek shares. “Be a girls girl!”

“Cause I’m here for you / Whenever you need / You don’t have to call / I’ll be waiting at the bar / These boys are dumb / Just let them be / Your beauty lies / Deeper than they’ll ever see,” Hucek sings before the memorable refrain, which feels like a mantra: “I’m a girls girl.”

With “strong loyalty” to each other, the heroines in our “girls girl” squad have each other’s back, and “horny” guys are not allowed. In their exclusive space, they have the freedom to “talk for hours” and enjoy each other’s company at karaoke parties for as long as they feel like it, without being pressured for sex. “Girls Girl” challenges gender norms in a way that is assertive, but not argumentative, suggesting that these ladies are not going to waste any more time on guys who were not worth their attention in the first place.

Hucek’s body of work includes an EP and several singles, which collectively received more than a hundred thousand streams, a testament to her growing influence and reach. The fact that Hucek recently rediscovered a career in music after considering abandoning her dream makes her success story nothing short of inspiring.

Fans of Gwen Stefani and Britney Spears will identify with Marilyn Hucek’s girl power vibe that draws from commercial electro pop and ska, offering a welcome blast from the 90s. “Girls Girl” was mixed and mastered by producer Cuja. The booming bass line and chill, dance-worthy instrumentation make this song a perfect addition to your party playlist. Stay tuned for upcoming releases from this rising talent.
