Maisie May Gives a New Definition to Bedroom-Pop with “I Could’ve Sworn”

By Margaret Adams

Brooklyn-native Maisie May has released her new single “I Could’ve Sworn:” this is the first single after the release of her debut EP “Face It” in 2021.

Maisie May has explored many different themes in her new single that deviates from her last EP. “Face It,” which has been critically acclaimed in Notion, Earmilk, Music Crowns and more, is full of pure pop joy. However, “I Could’ve Sworn” is a new and more vulnerable and softer take on pop, making it the quintessential bedroom-pop song.

In fact, May brings a whole new definition to bedroom-pop – the track was written, recorded and produced single-handedly in her small bedroom in Brooklyn. Both piano and powerful synth beats allow the song to take on a more emotional feel. At its heart, “I Could’ve Sworn” is a ballad that explores the feelings surrounding heartbreak.

“I wrote ‘I Could’ve Sworn’ last fall when I was trying to make sense of an unexpected heartbreak. Mentally, I was jumping between feelings of love, loss, sadness, anger, hatred, etc., and I couldn’t make sense of anything. Writing this song was one of the first successful steps I took towards comprehension and closure. It was an extremely special and cathartic experience which is why I’m so happy to finally share it with the world.”

Fans of The Japanese House, Wet, and Olivia Rodrigo should check out Maisie May’s new single “I Could’ve Sworn.” The track is available on Spotify, Apple Music, SoundCloud, and YouTube. Follow our Alchemical Multigenre Mixdown playlist for more great music featured on the site.
