Hailing from Malmö in southern Sweden, indie pop band Louis Pax released their brooding single, “Spanish Rain,” on February 4. If they sound familiar, the quartet previously released nine singles under the name Royal Prospect.

Brothers Oscar Reingsdahl (lead singer) and his brother Gustav Reingsdahl (guitar) teamed up with childhood friends Hannes Tingfors (bass) and Hannes Pennsäter (drums) to win the Swedish version of the Emergenza Festival in 2014. Following this victory, they were signed to an indie label, and the rest is history. Louis Pax has since toured internationally, performing at events in the USA, Taiwan, Canada, Japan, and even opened for Usher at an event organized by SXSW during the Swedish leg of his tour.

The past two years have been a monumental challenge for performers, but Louis Pax spent the time “[evaluating] their musical path.” While working on “Spanish Rain,” they realized that they “didn’t want to be put in a box anymore.” The band describes the song as capturing “the comedown moment brokenhearted winter cigarette in the small morning hours, where you finally understand that all that you thought you had and held, is now out of your grasp and beyond control.”

In a departure from the party vibe of their previous releases, “Spanish Rain” ruminates over the disorienting nature of heartbreak. “[We] wanted to be free in the creation and interpretation of our music; both the sound and genre, but also in potential collaborations.” Sporting a list of talented collaborators in “Spanish Rain,” Louis Pax is off to a good start, and well on their way to establishing their place in the music industry.

Fans of Bon Iver and The 1975 will identify with Louis Pax. Follow our Alchemical Weekly Spotify Playlist for more great music featured on the site.
