Kovey Coles Exhorts Listeners: Don’t ‘Waste Your Time’

By Daniel Warren Hill

This Alchemical Records article is read by the author to provide a multimedia experience for our audience while increasing the accessibility of our content to persons with hearing loss, low vision, dyslexia, physical or motor disabilities, or are on the autism spectrum.

Our last coverage of Kovey Coles, former Virginia artist presently residing in Los Angeles and one half of the electro-R&B duo, Browni, was earlier this year regarding the release of his metaphoric and progressive track, “Temporary Hold” about Black Americans in society in which Coles cautions listeners about the exploitation of Black Americans through consumerism. Coles continues to write powerful lyrics with strong production values that best serve the song. His latest, “Waste Your Time,” has a smooth airy sound that is relaxing enough to just enjoy listening to but also has a down-tempo groove that you can still dance to.

Influenced by other genre-bending artists like Frank Ocean, Childish Gambino and Tyler, the Creator, Coles utilizes his talents as a guitarist and poet to incorporate elements of jazz and electronic, as well as alternative and art rock into his own alternative, R&B, and hip-hop sound.

Lyrically, “Waste Your Time” begins from a place of despondency: “Lying on the ground,” and experiencing the feeling of being set back, unable to maintain an equal footing with everyone around you. Coles says, “Ultimately though, the mood is lighthearted because every journey is worthwhile and any moment that brings happiness, no matter how fleeting, is not a waste.”

It’s inspiring to be able to share a track that encourages listeners (including myself) that waiting for perfect moments in time to achieve the dreams you have for yourself is ineffective. Rather, regardless of whatever struggle or adversity you face, begin making progress where you can rather than “Waste Your Time.”

This track has been added to our Alchemical Records Weekly Spotify Playlist, enjoy!
