Kitty Coen Evokes 90’s Nostalgia in “rotten tomatoes”

By Emma Page

Nashville-based alternative artist Kitty Coen recently released her new throwback-inspired single, “rotten tomatoes”.

Written independently by Coen, the track melds modern indie alt-pop with dreamy 90’s rock. With influences like The Cure and The Cranberries, this song encapsulates the feeling of unapologetically dancing in your room at night.

The single opens with powerful piano progressions, and Coen relatably sings, “Oh, I’m so tired of sleeping ‘til three in the afternoon / I wish I cared about anything other than you”. She admits that she and her love are “not the hottest thing,” but they “got something going”.

Coen is joined by an upbeat rhythm and repeats the chorus throughout the track: “Don’t wait for love or it’ll pass by you / Don’t wait to do the right thing, it’s never the right time”. She is also accompanied by a compelling bassline and vocal harmonies. Those elements, along with her ethereal vocal improvisations and added sonic effects, make this track twinkle.

She captures the complicated emotions of anticipation regarding relationships, while still reminding us to do whatever is right. Coen urges to reflect on the love you have while you have it, and this song is quite the love story.

“Be the love you want to see in the world,” Coen says. “Even when you feel like you are getting rotten tomatoes thrown at you from every direction, even when you feel like no one is giving you the ‘ratings’ you deserve, screw it. Show love, be love, because it could pass right by you.”

Foghat’s Roger Earl Refuses to Slow His Ride

By this point in his life, Foghat founding drummer Roger Earl has visited quite a few doctors. But what may be surprising is that the percussionist, 77, is quick to point out that many of the medical professionals who have worked on him also enjoy rocking out.

“Nearly all the doctors and surgeons I know, they all play something: trumpet, sax, violin, guitar,” Earl said recently. “There’s not too many drummers that are surgeons, there’s probably a good reason for that!”

Earl half-jokingly invites his surgeon-rockers to join him and the other members of Foghat onstage at the Fillmore in Silver Spring March 9, where they will be headlining the Rock and Roll for Children Foundation benefit for the Children’s Inn at NIH. Earl, the only original member of Foghat still in the band, will be banging the skins behind guitarist Bryan Bassett and other members Scott Holt and Rodney O’Quinn. “Slow Ride,” the band’s 1975 megahit, is all but assured to be on the setlist, along with tunes from Foghat’s most recent record, “Sonic Mojo.”
