Just Another Heartbreak Song from Jon Tyler Wiley & His Virginia Choir

The Alchemist

Since its inception, Jon Tyler Wiley & His Virginia Choir has claimed to be a country band that does not play country music. Just a glance at a live show proves this: electric guitars and fiddles winding in and out of one another under a screaming B3 organ with story telling lyrics of love and pain, all wrapped up in a high energy performance. Upon further inspection, you will find syncopated and polyrhythmic drums that recall the influence of world music and alternative rock; eccentric bass grooves lend a new wave influence; noisy textures and outside tonal passages hint more at modern jazz than honky-tonk.

The band the Virginia Choir is made up of seasoned musicians who have performed with Keller Williams, Curtis Grimes, and The Dirty River Boys, as well as jazz ensembles and pit orchestras around the Northern Virginia area. The diverse band, made up of Eddie Dickerson (fiddle, guitar), Thomas Johnson (keyboards), and husband-and-wife rhythm section Brian ‘Piper’ Barbre (drums) and Joanna Smith (bass), is becoming known for energetic live performances and powerful musicianship.

In this behind the scenes music video for the extremely catchy “Just Another Heartbreak Song”, the audience can catch a glimpse of what it is like to be in this fun band, along with what they would look like live for someone who has not seen them by providing footage from Jammin Java, Rock by the Sea, Wilderness Run Vineyards, and more. Passionate on the fiddle, Eddie Dickerson is definitely someone that knows how to put on a show. Seeing the genuine smiles on all the faces as they not only perform, but travel and spend time together illustrates that this is what they are meant to be doing!

To hear more Jon Tyler Wiley, stay tuned for the band’s debut EP this summer and a full length solo album, “The Longing” this fall!

Foghat’s Roger Earl Refuses to Slow His Ride

By this point in his life, Foghat founding drummer Roger Earl has visited quite a few doctors. But what may be surprising is that the percussionist, 77, is quick to point out that many of the medical professionals who have worked on him also enjoy rocking out.

“Nearly all the doctors and surgeons I know, they all play something: trumpet, sax, violin, guitar,” Earl said recently. “There’s not too many drummers that are surgeons, there’s probably a good reason for that!”

Earl half-jokingly invites his surgeon-rockers to join him and the other members of Foghat onstage at the Fillmore in Silver Spring March 9, where they will be headlining the Rock and Roll for Children Foundation benefit for the Children’s Inn at NIH. Earl, the only original member of Foghat still in the band, will be banging the skins behind guitarist Bryan Bassett and other members Scott Holt and Rodney O’Quinn. “Slow Ride,” the band’s 1975 megahit, is all but assured to be on the setlist, along with tunes from Foghat’s most recent record, “Sonic Mojo.”
