Jay Cass Takes Us on an Electronic Journey to “Somewhere”

Long Island-based producer and musician, Jonathan Casanova (also known by his stage name, Jay Cass), shows off his trap skills with his latest single “Somewhere”. An instrumental track that takes its time through a slow burning beat.

Of the various synthesized sounds, it’s the breathy vocal sample that stands out. It doesn’t say anything particularly coherent until the end where Cass reveals the titular line “Take me somewhere far away from here”. Until that point, he opts for chopping the sample into small rhythmic bits that make the song feel like it has lungs attached to a beat machine. The percussive breaths and nonsensical rearrangement of syllables bring a calm, yet eerie feel to the song’s core that is captivating, and, admittedly, danceable.

In a way, this song has a feeling of wanderlust that permeates through each note, which gives it a sense of versatility. As easily as I can imagine this song being played in a club, I can also imagine it on playlists for stargazing or long car rides. With the track being primarily instrumental, it can morph to meet many kinds of moments which only works to Cass’s benefit as a songwriter and producer. Whatever your point of entry may be, there is an oasis of electronic beats waiting to whisper in your ear, longing to take you somewhere far away from wherever you may be.

“Somewhere” is available now on major streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music. Find it on the Alchemical Records Mutligenre Mixture playlist on Spotify!

Foghat’s Roger Earl Refuses to Slow His Ride

By this point in his life, Foghat founding drummer Roger Earl has visited quite a few doctors. But what may be surprising is that the percussionist, 77, is quick to point out that many of the medical professionals who have worked on him also enjoy rocking out.

“Nearly all the doctors and surgeons I know, they all play something: trumpet, sax, violin, guitar,” Earl said recently. “There’s not too many drummers that are surgeons, there’s probably a good reason for that!”

Earl half-jokingly invites his surgeon-rockers to join him and the other members of Foghat onstage at the Fillmore in Silver Spring March 9, where they will be headlining the Rock and Roll for Children Foundation benefit for the Children’s Inn at NIH. Earl, the only original member of Foghat still in the band, will be banging the skins behind guitarist Bryan Bassett and other members Scott Holt and Rodney O’Quinn. “Slow Ride,” the band’s 1975 megahit, is all but assured to be on the setlist, along with tunes from Foghat’s most recent record, “Sonic Mojo.”
