On May 2, Australian, Indian, Swiss, and Spanish singer-songwriter ISHAN released his latest single, “Hello,” which he describes as a “romantic, feel-good pop song about having twenty seconds of insane courage.” Characteristic of the emerging artist’s signature style, “Hello” explores the nuances of everyday life under a fresh lens of whimsy and wonder.
Towards “Kissed you in the hallway a thousand times,” ISHAN sings in the opening lines of “Hello,” which makes for an impactful turn when juxtaposed with the phrase that follows – “never once in real life.” The accompanying music video spans the storyline of ISHAN pursuing the girl of his dreams – at first as only a fantasy – until the moment that he decides to put it all on the line and ask her out.
“You wouldn’t understand / The effect that a girl like you can have / That’s why it’s taken me so long to ask,” ISHAN sings in the pre-chorus. Hello is such a simple word, and yet in this case, one that conveys the depth of emotions of a gregarious-turned-tongue-tied admirer.
The release of “Hello” coincides with ISHAN’s 20th birthday, and there’s a feeling in the air that wishes will come true. The music video invites viewers into the couple’s first date from the inevitable indecisiveness over what to wear to the “wow” moment when ISHAN picks up his new girlfriend holding a bouquet of flowers.
The sweetness of delivery in both the audio and visual elements liken “Hello” to a fairytale and one that audiences find themselves believing in. Colors are vibrant, senses are heightened, and every tender touch is felt profoundly. ISHAN’s sense of humor also takes center stage throughout the date, as the couple transitions from enjoying a private meal on an empty theatre stage, to playing games in the arcade, to enjoying an intimate night together.
ISHAN notes that “Hello” “speaks to a broader truth around reaching out and being vulnerable.” The crossroads of facing an uncertain outcome and deciding to take one’s chances in “Hello” echoes themes reflected in several of ISHAN’s recent singles, including “This Blank Wall” and “Go.” “We’re always afraid, and it never feels like ‘the right time,’ but in taking that risk anyway, there is magic,” said ISHAN.
The outcome of a relationship, or anything else in life for that matter, is never certain. With its sincere, heartfelt delivery, “Hello” moves audiences to take the first step toward whatever it is that they desire and embrace the excitement of possibility. For anyone who is at a loss of where to begin, ISHAN reminds us that it’s simple: start with hello.

As a producer bringing some major events to Capital Pride this year, Zach Renovátes admits that he was keen to get Betty Who on the lineup. After having seen several of her live performances already, Renovátes knew the Australian would make a fine marquee addition to the “Kinetic Presents Candyland” event at Echostage June 10.
Fortunately, she was both available and interested.
“Something that I personally saw was that [Betty Who] is one of the most pro-LGBT singer-songwriters I’ve ever ever seen perform live,” Renovátes said, adding that the D.C. audiences at her concerts come largely from within the gay community. “So she absolutely knows that we as queer people make up a huge percentage of her fan base.”
The June 10 event is the main draw of a weekend of collaborations between Kinetic Presents and the Capital Pride Alliance in celebration of D.C. Pride 2023. Other big names who will play at various venues around the District include DJs Abel and Cindel, Dan Slater, as well as Jerac and Paulo Fragoso. It’ll be a pride-filled musical weekend indeed, with Echostage, Sax, Bunker and Bliss Nightclub hosting the pulsing sounds of revelry. And there’s also the big parade on June 10.
