Gritty City Records Gives a Not So Science Fiction Double Feature

By Maura Marcellino

Get ready for a not so Science Fiction Double Feature! At almost seven and a half minutes, Richmond artists, friends, and frequent collaborators, Ndefru & Fan Ran, Johnny Ciggs, and Starr Nyce team up for this epic short film from SHEESH named GODFACE/WEEDEDITUP off of Ndefru and Fan Ran’s “Richmond Gas” LP from Gritty City Records.

Shifting between black and white film and color film, this short film is reminiscent of the iconic 2014 collaboration of “Detroit vs. Everybody” between Detroit natives Trick Trick, Eminem, DeJ Loaf, Danny Brown, Big Sean, and Royce da 5’9″.

GODFACE (part one) starts off with a dramatic synth and bell chimes as the viewer watches the (very fashionable) friends travel across shops, restaurants, repair garages, and more. Filled with funny little phrases such as “Mercy me!” “Too much wax, I can’t hear you,” and “Razor never touched my face” (in regards to his clean beard), this song entertains during the dark and heavy video. Johnny Ciggs raps “…my man Ran laid this sample over perfect percussion.” What an accurate way to describe this track.

With a record scratch sound effect, “WEEDEDIT UP” (part two) begins as the driver turns the volume up on the AUX Jack and soft piano emits. Again, not a Science Fiction Double Feature, but listen in for some clever Star Trek and Star Wars references.
