Ever listened to a French quartet explore the duality of humankind? This week, Gojira is coming to The National and offering you the chance to do just that! “I can’t help but see humanity as a parasite, and yet the most beautiful things come out of humans,” explains guitarist and songwriter Joe Duplantier. The band has spent the last 15 years exploring the best and worst parts of humanity through their music, translating it into their own distinctive sound marked with crushing metal brightened by triumphant arena-rock melodies, chock full of contradictions, emotions, and self-reflection. In 2016, the group released “Magma”, a record straight from the heart which was written in memory of brothers Joe and Mario Duplantier’s late mother. Its release was bittersweet, releasing their intensely personal thoughts and feelings into the world while raking in various accolades, from debuting at #24 on the Billboard 200 chart to topping the Billboard “Hard Rock Albums” chart and getting Grammy nominations for Best Rock Album and Best Metal Performance. All of which was soon followed by numerous global headlining tours, including a stint with Metallica. Their newest album, “Fortitude”, contradicts the heavier melancholy vibes of “Magma” with the bright encouragement to imagine and work for a better world. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to see them live this week, and buckle up for the existential ride of a lifetime.
