Fan Ran…Gritty City Record’s hottest new artist comes at you with authority, authenticity, and austere flow – smooth and silky. He’s been active in the DMV rap circuit since 2015, and has a sound that is all at once sincere, hard, and floaty. Fan Ran continues to deliver time and time again, not to mention his incredibly adept live crew of musicians providing beats that resemble the pre-pandemic touring efforts of John Legend and J. Cole.
Brewer’s Sessions hosted Fan Ran on their February 24th special, masks in play for safety, but the music itself was as hard and dangerous as anything recorded during this pandemic. Fan Ran and his band sound like this could even be a freestyle effort, but it is assuredly not, instead rehearsed so well that it just has a free sound that comes effortlessly. Specifically, “How Shall I Rock Thee” is an incredibly solid and intense journey right at home next to classics such as Kendrick Lamar’s multi-Grammy award-winning HUMBLE. from 2015’s DAMN.
