Dopapod Funks With Science in “Black Holes”

By Daniel Warren Hill

Funk, Progressive Rock, and Psychedelic Rock band Dopapod’s latest single “Black Holes” is a multidimensional track that puts listeners right into the groove with a four on the floor kick drum before the chorus, reminiscent of classic rock and psychedelia, kicks in the band’s massive vocal harmonies deliver: “All for one, and one for all, you’ll never fly til you learn to fall into Black Holes.” The bridge is still funky, but in many ways reminds us of our favorite Saturday morning cartoon before a searing solo that precedes yet another verse that contains what feels like more than one key chance. If you listen to this track and your body doesn’t begin to involuntarily find ways to move with it, you should check your pulse, and the same is true of their other offerings as well.

The Dopapod quartet, based in Boston, Consists of Eli Winderman (keys, vocals), Rob Compa (guitar, vocals), Chuck Jones (bass), and Neal “Fro” Evans (drums), who have been combining their efforts to create a hypnotic hybrid of funk, rock, jazz, bluegrass, and electronica since 2009. With nearly 50,000 Spotify listeners alone at the time of this writing, it is easy to get the sense that fans really connect with the band’s intentions of creating a true listening experience through their recorded music and performance on stage. Dopapod’s range of influences throughout just one song alone is impressive. Overall, their sound seems to fall somewhere between Parliament-Funkadelic, Rush, and Dinosaur Jr with just a touch of The Allman Brothers. Fans of artists like Disco Biscuits and Perpetual Groove who are not already on the Dopapod bandwagon better hop on quickly.
