Singer, songwriter, and rapper Mona Soul has recently released her new cinematic music video for her empowering song “Relationship Status,” an ode to people who can’t mind their own business.
“I’m done dealing with attitude / I’m blessed, you’re stressed about what I do,” Soul opens the track, and we are met with several different aesthetic shots of her, such as lying in a bed of flowers or, in contrast, straight-facing the camera and giving it the middle finger in an empty art museum. You can feel her passion through her lyrics and expressions, as she radiates confidence and personality and exemplifies her stylistic range. She stays true to herself while others try to get in the way: “Don’t try to hold me up to let me down / Obsessive thoughts intrude your mind,” she sings.
Born Jasmine Mona Rorie in Northern Virginia, Soul has continuously worked to expand her skills and further her musical craft. She strives to bring “an experimental approach to the R&B/Soul/Hip-Hop culture while staying true to the traditional values that make it the most progressive and unique genre.” Some notable achievements of hers include being featured on Spotify’s “Fresh Finds: Hip-Hop” curated playlist and songwriting for projects for Rihanna and Cardi B.
Make sure to catch upcoming releases from this local breakout artist you are sure to see soon around the DMV area. As heard in this track, she is establishing her voice and making it known that she won’t take any sh*t from anyone.
