On February 23, New York City-based producer, DJ, and songwriter Cy Noel released her latest single, “Out of Sight,” which reflects on the painful journey of finding yourself after an unexpected breakup. The melodic electro pop track is distinct and memorable, uniquely blending genres to create a sound all of its own.
“But no cover can hide the truth / This hide and seek / It’s bittersweet / The tears I’ve cried / Rinse and repeat,” Cy Noel sings in the opening lines of “Out of Sight.” The melancholy piano intro is reminiscent of the haunting energy that takes centerstage in Alanis Morissette’s “Uninvited.” As the song builds, intricate pads and a dancefloor drum beat are introduced to support the piano and Cy Noel’s expressive, powerful vocals in an intriguing way.
The introspective nature of “Out of Sight” offers a window into the unraveling of the relationship. “Thought you would show some kindness,” “I gave it all up for you,” and “my every attempt was my last defense” capture the great lengths to which the protagonist went in an attempt to save the relationship. Driven by the line “I can’t control these emotions lately,” the chorus speaks to the difficulty of moving on after a breakup, when pieces of ourselves remain intertwined with memories of what used to be.
Despite the heartbreak, “Out of Sight” suggests that our leading character knows their worth and can already see a glimmer of hope in a new path forward without their former flame. “I’m out of your arms and back in my own mind / In the eye of the beholder and the eye is mine,” Cy Noel sings.
Cy Noel, who was born in California and raised in Tokyo and Hong Kong, brings all of her experiences to bear in her art, providing a rich canvas from which to draw from in her music. “Out of Sight” is the follow-up to her 2021 single “Remember.” Cy Noel’s cinematic sound is soulful, moody, and quite lovely, positioning her as a rising talent to watch.
