Composers Glenn Fallows and Mark Treffel Present “The Globeflower Masters (Vol. 2)”

In The Globeflower Masters (Vol. 2), the new album from Brighton-based musicians and composers Glenn Fallows and Mark Treffel, the duo successfully offers an exploration into the psychedelic sounds of European cinema soundtracks and library music.

The second installment in this record series follows Fallows and Treffel as they incorporate their European film soundtrack influences into their work, with particular inspiration from Stefano Torossi, David Shire, and Roger Webb. “This expansion of their sound builds upon the rich tapestry of cinematic funk à la David Axelrod, Serge Gainsbourg and Morricone, whose sounds helped mold the record.”

The album opens with “Vibe Sharp”, which leaves you intrigued to see what the rest of the album has in store. Its natural progression utilizes different types of percussion and other sounds to create the unique music.

The Globeflower Masters (Vol. 2) seems to reflect some sort of journey, as we can hear in “Echo the Oread”. The album contains slower songs like “Remember Empathy”, but also more upbeat ones like “Calico Suite”. “Ely to Chi” exhibits the duo’s strength in piano. “Orquesta Es Vedrà” and “A Voyage North” prepare you for the second half of the album, which takes a spacey feel, exhibited in “Moogs Over Jupiter” and “Darkness Beneath”. All sorts of instruments are used to build their sound, and the other-worldly album ends with “Walked for Days”, an epic end to this project.

“Overall, this album is our tribute to the music we love that soundtracks not only our favourite media, but also the most remarkable events of our lives,” the duo said. “There are personal stories behind some of the tracks, which we’re sure we will tell over time. However, we think it’s important for listeners to be able to invent their own stories and meanings as they listen to and experience the music. We’d love to hear these stories as and when they’re made.”

Foghat’s Roger Earl Refuses to Slow His Ride

By this point in his life, Foghat founding drummer Roger Earl has visited quite a few doctors. But what may be surprising is that the percussionist, 77, is quick to point out that many of the medical professionals who have worked on him also enjoy rocking out.

“Nearly all the doctors and surgeons I know, they all play something: trumpet, sax, violin, guitar,” Earl said recently. “There’s not too many drummers that are surgeons, there’s probably a good reason for that!”

Earl half-jokingly invites his surgeon-rockers to join him and the other members of Foghat onstage at the Fillmore in Silver Spring March 9, where they will be headlining the Rock and Roll for Children Foundation benefit for the Children’s Inn at NIH. Earl, the only original member of Foghat still in the band, will be banging the skins behind guitarist Bryan Bassett and other members Scott Holt and Rodney O’Quinn. “Slow Ride,” the band’s 1975 megahit, is all but assured to be on the setlist, along with tunes from Foghat’s most recent record, “Sonic Mojo.”
