Chris Mallett Basks in Summer Vibes ‘Coastin’ Down the 10′

By Cynthia Gross

On July 2, Los Angeles-born singer-songwriter Chris Mallett released his latest single, “Coastin’ Down the 10,” ft. Niv-Lac. The buoyant, feel-good rap track, which showcases the emerging artist’s lyrical flow, offers a perfect addition to your summer playlist.

Chris Mallett began composing “Coastin’ Down the 10” on piano as a self-care exercise while applying for internships as a Ph.D. student at Howard University in Washington, D.C. As part of his predoctoral internship, Mallett is now based in Phoenix, where he provides mental therapy in schools to children and their families.

“Months later, my producer friend Niv-Lac added drums that gave the track a different energy and instantly inspired me to rap,” he shared. “Coastin’ Down the 10” combines rap verses and positive lyrics with a melodic refrain. Themes of faith, love, and self-improvement are in abundance throughout the deeply affecting composition.

Chris Mallett’s authenticity is palpable, and it’s refreshing to encounter an artist who embraces the freedom to be their original self. “Coastin’ down the 10, we straight cruising / Drumming on the wheel with playful amusement / Drove winding roads to reach this moment / Thinking of this year, I’m filled with excitement,” Mallett sings gently in the heartfelt refrain.

“It’s full circle to think that the beat started while I felt stressed doing internship apps, and then almost a year later, I’m rapping on that beat about my excitement to move to a new city to start the internship,” Mallett reflected.

Mallett’s cross-country trip “Coastin’ Down the 10” from the DMV to Arizona serves as a parallel to his internal journey. Mallett has an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the gift of arriving at this moment with a supportive mother by his side, a God that has him feeling like a humble “show-off,” and a dream that is soon to manifest.

“Coastin’ Down the 10” follows a noteworthy lineup of releases from Chris Mallett, including “Live Out My Days with You.” Fans of Kanye West, Drake, and Chiddy Bang will identify with Mallett’s ability to blend genres effortlessly to a harmonious effect.

The final lines of the chorus, which are my favorite, speak to overcoming obstacles that once felt insurmountable: “Barely made it here, but we made it here / Let’s shake things up, a new frontier.” After a prolonged season of navigating monumental challenges, including the pandemic, we are all still here. Perhaps new beginnings have never felt so worthwhile and full of promise.

GLOSSER Releases Deluxe Edition of Debut Record, DOWNER

When D.C. venues were ready to reopen after COVID-19, indie pop duo GLOSSER was ready to perform. The two, Riley Fanning and Corbin Sheehan, formed the band pre-COVID out of a shared aesthetic vision and passion for music storytelling.
Their first album *DOWNER* was released in January 2023, however they have decided to release a [__deluxe version__]( exactly one year later containing four new tracks – two remixes, a reimagined song, and a cover – that they are hoping will give it a second life and allow them to continue performing around the area.

The band explains that they have spent many shows opening for touring bands that traveled through D.C. “We made music and then venues started to open again,” Sheehan says. Rather than having the “typical grungy” D.C. band experience, they uniquely went straight to club shows.
