What’s a better way to kick off your weekend than going to PiLam Jams, an electric performance featuring Chimpanzees & Cigarettes and some other well-known artists at Centro Taco Bar? Nothing, except for going to said performance and knowing it’s for an amazing cause. Let’s backtrack.
A few years ago, six friends discovered their shared musical talent and came together to form an alternative rock band – dubbed Chimpanzees and Cigarettes after a late-night, slightly delirious Zoom call. Drawing inspiration from bands such as The Stokes, Phish, and Red Hot Chili Peppers, Chimpanzees and Cigarettes have worked hard cultivating their own unique neo-alternative sound, with just a hint of blues. But, with their wide range of musical inspirations and a bright future ahead of them, it’s almost impossible to limit this band to one particular genre.
Now, I mentioned an amazing cause. Along with being in a band, these boys are members of the same fraternity – Pi Lambda Phi at Virginia Tech. About a year ago, the fraternity found out that one of their brothers, Shane Burke, had been diagnosed with cancer. This week he made his triumphant return to Virginia Tech, his battle won and 100% cancer-free! The PiLam Jams philanthropy concert was created in his honor, with all proceeds going to support SJMB12 brain cancer clinical studies.
