Carmen Jackson Asks “Where Do We Go From Here”

Daniel Warren Hill

Originally released May 2018 and to appear on upcoming album Resilience, slated for release at the end of 2021, “Where Do We Go From Here” is a comprehensive introduction to the work of Alto Mezzo, Second Soprano vocalist Carmen Jackson, who is often compared to Nancy Wilson and Nina Simone. A comparison to such dynamic vocalists alone should pique your interest, but wait there’s more! Jackson is a Detroit native with an established presence in the local jazz community, and could even claim a title as jazz royalty with family such as her father, percussionist Manley Jackson Jr., and uncle Milt Jackson, notably the creator of the Modern Jazz Quartet.

But wait there’s more! “Where Do We Go From Here” is a track containing Jackson’s impeccable vocals arranged with care and featuring passionate performances of each instrument. The feel of the song guides the listener on an incredible journey at a perfect pace that consistently uplifts the listener just a little higher as instruments swell and build, until, before you know it, the song is over and you’re reaching for the repeat button.

Thankfully, you won’t have to wait until Resilience drops at the end of the year. “Where Do We Go From Here” was released on all major platforms January 22, 2021 and available for you to hear for yourself below:

Foghat’s Roger Earl Refuses to Slow His Ride

By this point in his life, Foghat founding drummer Roger Earl has visited quite a few doctors. But what may be surprising is that the percussionist, 77, is quick to point out that many of the medical professionals who have worked on him also enjoy rocking out.

“Nearly all the doctors and surgeons I know, they all play something: trumpet, sax, violin, guitar,” Earl said recently. “There’s not too many drummers that are surgeons, there’s probably a good reason for that!”

Earl half-jokingly invites his surgeon-rockers to join him and the other members of Foghat onstage at the Fillmore in Silver Spring March 9, where they will be headlining the Rock and Roll for Children Foundation benefit for the Children’s Inn at NIH. Earl, the only original member of Foghat still in the band, will be banging the skins behind guitarist Bryan Bassett and other members Scott Holt and Rodney O’Quinn. “Slow Ride,” the band’s 1975 megahit, is all but assured to be on the setlist, along with tunes from Foghat’s most recent record, “Sonic Mojo.”
