Cam Blair Sees Both Sides of the Club in “Pick It Up”

By Daniel Warren Hill

Jamaica, Queens, New York-based Trap and Hip-Hip artist, Cam Blair has just released his latest single, “Pick It Up.” An atypical club song, the hook for “Pick It Up” feels familiar, but the verses provide an introspective look into the feelings, intentions, and sometimes harsh realities of the often glamourized nightlife.

How I end up in the club when I / Said I’m on a budget / Fuck it / I’ma live tonight / Like Warren Buffet / Drink of choice / Was made in France / Bring that Moët by the bucket / Gotta a genie in my pants / And I’m hoping she could rub it / Check my bank account tomorrow / And consider was it worth it / Depending on the ending of the night / It all determines

Blair speaks about the nature of going to a club to hook up; splurging way over budget to try to feel and look impressive. Later in “Pick It Up,” he illuminates into how for some this is actually part of a larger mating ritual intended to find a deeper more meaningful relationship but often leads to feelings of rejection and inadequacy.

Knew I was the shit even though / You tried to wipe me off / Treated like ya taxes / You was wishing you could / Write me off / Had a thing for you / Would’ve made a wife and all

“Pick It Up” is a very different sounding type of track compared to his earlier 2022 release, “Feel A Way.” Listeners convert into fans after recognizing Cam Blair’s versatility both musically and topically throughout his various releases since his debut in 2021 with “Rain Dance.” Blair continues to explore every aspect of his artistry; intent on conveying substantive meaning with each release, saying, “Every song has a message, visual or not. Dig deep because there’s nothing insubstantial.”
