Benny Bassett Expels Rumors with “What You Believe”

By Margaret Adams

Chicago-native Benny Bassett is stepping back into the indie rock scene with his new EP “What You Believe.” The EP is set to release on April 8, 2022, and is his first release since his 2019 EP “Words for Yesterday.”

Bassett has an interesting back story, as he started his career working as a lawyer in Chicago. After a decade, he became the co- leader of a Chicago band called Vintage Blue. He performed with the band at multiple music festivals and stages around the Chicago area, and eventually ended his career as a lawyer; he started his solo career with his first EP, “These Dreams” around 2016. Over the COVID-19 pandemic, Bassett learned how to engineer and produce his own music through online videos, classes, and friends.

The title track “What You Believe” is a groovy indie rock song that illustrates the power of truth; Bassett’s smooth vocals and electric guitar solos throughout the 5 minute track will have the listener swaying their head from side to side. The lyrics speak to the destruction of rumors, and the way that the truth is elusive because everyone will always have their own side to the story.

“We can all relate to the way something goes down, and then all the different versions about our part in it,” said Bassett. “‘What You Believe’ gets down to the nitty gritty on telling someone to tell the truth, and stop spreading rumors about their version of what happened.”
