Bathe in the Ethereal Mist of Maroulita de Kol’s Debut Album ‘AnasanA’

By Charlie Maybee

Berlin based Greek musician, Maroulita de Kol, has released her debut album as a solo artist titled AnasanA, which brings a modern tone to traditional Greek music styles. As a classical pianist, singer, and composer, she has reworked the storytelling and culture of Greek music over the last decade into something new that merges old and new worlds into something ethereal.

Sung entirely in Greek, the melodies are soft and haunting. From the first few moments of the opening song “The Water”, her vocals feel ambient floating upon arpeggiated piano scales and expansive synthesizers. It captures a mysticism that feels untethered to anything earthly, and it crashes gently like ocean waves upon a shore at low tide. There’s an undeniable pull that summons you in, but once you arrive you’ll find yourself suspended in cloud-like wingspan.

“It started from a single mantra and the mantra became a piece and the piece became an album” Maroulita recalls, “Kind of a spell to overcome the physical isolation of the first lockdown during Spring. Debating mostly with silence and inviting as allies my friends when I needed a reminder of togetherness and sense of self, I developed an album that decided almost by itself when to put a closure. Kafkos-The Lover, the last piece, is composed as the last blows of air of this exhalation and already consists of all the visions that come with the next breath.”

Despite some of the very earthy song titles (“The Water”, “The Witch”, “The Tree”) you can feel the otherworldliness of her musical prowess coming through each note. It luxuriates and basks in mystic water who’s current drifts beyond the horizon.

AnasanA is available now on major streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music. Check out “The Water” below or find it on the Alchemical Records Multigenre Mixture playlist on Spotify.
