Ballyhoo! and The Expendables Join Forces to Cover Each Other’s Favorite Songs

By Cynthia Gross

For more than 25 years, Baltimore, Maryland-based reggae rock and punk band Ballyhoo! has been delighting audiences with their distinct sound and jubilant, dynamic energy. The band’s latest album, The ExpendaHOO!, offers an exciting experience, as Ballyhoo! teams up with The Expendables to cover each other’s songs.

The eight-track album debuts covers of fan favorites from the expansive catalog of both bands: Bruce Wayne, Social Drinker, Walk Away, Barnabas, Down Down Down, Let Her Go (Santa Cruz), Tight Squeeze, and Bowl for Two. Perhaps more than anything, the album reminds audiences that Ballyhoo! and The Expendables – hailing from the shores of Santa Cruz, California – are each a musical powerhouse, with decades of experience and successes to prove it.

Ballyhoo!’s downtempo cover of “Tight Squeeze,” originally written and released by The Expendables, is a standout track. The reggae-inspired song exudes nostalgic summertime vibes with the chorus lyrics: “Tight squeeze / Cool breeze / This is something that will never let us down.”

Coupled with Ballyhoo!’s lead singer and guitarist Howi Spangler’s smooth vocals, the song’s funky bass line, electric guitar reverb, and reggae rhythm create an attractive sound, encouraging many successive repeat listens. The end of the song features a memorable synth solo that adds a layer of melancholy to the composition. Supporting band members include Donald “Big D” Spangler (drums), JR Gregory (bass), and Scott Vandrey (turntables and keys).

Always fresh, fun, and embodied by the soul of the party lifestyle, Ballyhoo! has perfected their ability to serve as a soundtrack for all things good times. Regardless of your mood, a listen to Ballyhoo! will immediately lift your spirits. Their music reminds audiences everywhere to lighten up and enjoy the ride.

Described as a “rock band with punk energy and pop reggae grooves,” Ballyhoo!’s entreating, feel-good sound and hardcore devotion to their fans has pitched them into snowballing success. The band has performed with numerous national touring acts, including 311, Slightly Stoopid, SOJA, The Dirty Hands, and Matisyahu.
