Austin Fox 狐 Serves Up Experimental Vignettes in “SCORIAN VALLEY”

Rapper of the Shenandoah Valley, Austin Fox , takes a big step forward with the release of his latest album SCORIAN VALLEY which he uses as a journey towards independence as an artist. Led by the focus track “Relatives” which shows Fox working on his own self-alignment, it’s an ambitious album that finds its footing through introspective rearrangement.

“SCORIAN VALLEY is the next installment in my discography and my most exciting project to date,” Fox says confidently. “The story continues with my point of view as I journey down the rabbit hole of my pursuit of musical independence within the industry. Since the journey began, it seems like things have started to ‘heat up’ and thus where the fire analogy sort of began. As the album progressed, I wanted to hit a few pockets that I have been leaving out of my music, notably singing and harmonizing. The tape promotes the ideals of being content with yourself and learning how to ‘harness the flame’ that can be hard to hold in times of envy and competition.”

The album acts like a 15-part collection of vignettes where the songs are kept shorter (longest track is the closer SUPREME KAI BOOTS at 3 and a half minutes), and the effect is has a postmodern heaviness and distortion where things that sound normally sound classic and grand become distilled down to an essence. Led by Fox’s bass-heavy vocals that vibrate deep in his chest, there are darker, more experimental tones than one might expect. For fans of the late MF DOOM, this album is a treasure trove of weird, funky samples masterminded by an emcee who is unafraid of being himself and doing what he wants.

“Relatives”, in particular, shows off the brooding kind of sound that perforates through the entire album. Clocking in at one minute and forty nine seconds, it’s a sonic amuse-bouche (a bite sized hor d’œuvre) that leaves a deep impression. Reflecting on the song’s meaning, Fox writes that “‘Relatives’ is a statement on surrounding yourself with those who have your back and are in your best interest. It’s about dealing with that trauma of betrayal from those closest to you.”

“Relatives” and SCORIAN VALLEY are both available now on major streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music. Find “Relatives” alongside other excellent music on the Alchemical Records Multigenre Mixture playlist on Spotify.
