Animalweapon Says That You ‘Deserve’ It

By Margaret Adams

This reading of Alchemical Records content provides a multimedia experience for our audience while increasing the accessibility of our content to persons with hearing loss, low vision, dyslexia, physical or motor disabilities, or are on the autism spectrum.

The new single, “Deserve,” from lo-fi electronic artist, Animalweapon, illustrates a perfect balance between the energy of electronic beats and beautiful, melodic sounds. “Deserve” is the leading single for Animalweapon’s upcoming fourth album, which is set to release early 2022.

Animalweapon, the stage name of Patrick Cortes, has been performing in Raleigh, North Carolina for about a decade, through many stage shows and parties for Raleigh’s Hopscotch Music Festival. Aside from performing, Cortes has also produced music for podcasts.

He won a 2017 Webby Award for Best Sound Design/Original Music Score for his work on the hit podcast Undisclosed, which was the follow-up to the #1 iTunes media phenomenon Serial. Cortes also composed the theme song for the highly anticipated new podcast called The Hidden Djinn that debuted last year on iHeartMedia hosted by Rabia Chaudry and co-produced by Aaron Mahnke.

“Deserve” is a relaxing and beautiful track. Animalweapon’s modification of drum sounds and slower tempo emulates a combination of Radiohead’s A Moon Shaped Pool and The Weeknd’s Starboy.

The lyrics urge listeners not to let their anxiety and difficult pasts ruin the present; allowing that hurt to come between a person and their peace is destructive, and everyone deserves peace.

“It’s about coming to terms with the idea of “Hey, what if I didn’t self-sabotage all the time? What if I don’t deserve to let past experiences keep holding me back? What if I just allowed myself to believe that I deserve to be happy?” Cortes said.

“Deserve” is available on all major streaming services like Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, and Bandcamp. This track has been added to our Alchemical Weekly YouTube Playlist
